“O people, it is true that you have certain rights with regards to your women, but they also have rights over you. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothes in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery”.  Curled from the Prophet’s Last Sermon.

Islamic Family Law and Practices in North Western Nigeria
The goal of this project is to enhance the practice and application of Islamic Family Law in North Western Nigeria. The project also aims to develop a database documenting real life practices (cultural status and roles of men and women), circumstances (marriage, loss of spouse through divorce and death) as they affect women’s enjoyment of their rights in the seven North Western states covered by this project.

These practices will be compared to the provisions contained in the Islamic family law statutes to vividly establish the disparities between the legal rights of women as contained in the books of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and the practices in the project states. The project will embark on sensitization through a media and IT campaign, public events, advocacy as means of curtailing those practices that constrain women’s enjoyment of their rights as guaranteed by the Shari’a.
